Derrick Henry Endorses Lamar Jackson for MVP
In a recent discussion on The Triple Option podcast, Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry made it clear who he believes deserves the MVP award if the season were to conclude today: his teammate, quarterback Lamar Jackson. Speaking with former NFL player Mark Ingram, Henry expressed his strong support for Jackson, emphasizing the quarterback’s outstanding performance through the first seven games of the season.
Henry stated, “I don’t think it’s no question who’s No. 1 MVP right now.” He noted that Jackson is performing even better than during his previous MVP seasons, highlighting his remarkable skills and contributions to the team. “This guy is unbelievable. Being his teammate is just different. He’s different,” Henry added, underscoring Jackson’s exceptional talent and impact on the game.
Jackson is indeed having a standout season, currently on track to surpass his impressive statistics from 2023, when he earned his second MVP award. So far, he has thrown for 1,810 yards, accumulated 15 touchdowns against just two interceptions, and rushed for 455 yards along with two scores. His all-around ability is making a strong case for him to win the MVP title for a third time.
Historically, only six players have achieved the remarkable feat of winning the MVP award three times: Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady. Additionally, Jackson’s potential to secure back-to-back MVPs would place him among the elite company, as only a select few players have accomplished this in NFL history.
Henry himself is also having an impressive season, contributing significantly to the Ravens’ offensive success. The former All-Pro and 2020 Offensive Player of the Year leads the league with 873 rushing yards and shares the top spot for rushing touchdowns with eight. Notably, he recorded the longest touchdown run of the season, an impressive 87-yard sprint against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4.
As the Ravens prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Cleveland Browns, set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Huntington Bank Field, Jackson will have another opportunity to bolster his MVP candidacy. With both Jackson’s and Henry’s contributions, the Ravens (5-2) are in a strong position to contend for success this season.
