The Miami Hurricanes face a challenge ng matchup against the Florida State Seminoles, particularly in South Florida. Historically, Miami has struggled to secure decisive victories over their rival, largely due to both teams being strong competitors at the same time, especially during the 1980s through the early 2000s. Those years featured intense matchups filled with memorable finishes.
However, Miami’s performance dipped significantly in later years, leading to a decline in wins against Florida State. This struggle is well-known among Hurricanes fans.
Currently, the dynamics have shifted. Miami is now ranked in the Top 10, while Florida State finds itself in dire straits with a dismal 1-6 record after starting the season at #5. Given these circumstances, one might expect that anything can happen in a rivalry game, but this year’s context suggests otherwise.
Traditionally, records could be overlooked in rivalry matchups, but that does not apply this season. Miami must not only win but do so convincingly to prove their capability beyond narrowly defeating average teams. In fact, labeling Florida State as merely mediocre feels overly generous at this point.
Florida State is arguably the weakest opponent on Miami’s schedule, possibly only behind Florida A&M. Other teams, like Ball State and USF, are currently more competitive than the Seminoles. Florida has also shown improvement in recent weeks and would likely dominate Florida State.
Miami’s schedule lacks formidable opponents, which raises concerns about their strength of record. Unless Miami can secure a late-season win against a ranked Duke team, their resume may lack impressive victories by the end of the regular season.
As such, how Miami performs becomes crucial if they aim for a playoff at-large bid, particularly if they fail to win the ACC. They have struggled to impress recently, despite winning. While I appreciate the victories, the performances have been less than inspiring. I believe this team is capable of more; however, they must demonstrate that potential on the field to impress the playoff committee.
A major focus must be on Miami’s defense. While Cam Ward and the offense provide excitement, which could appeal to viewers and selection committee members, the defense’s inconsistency raises doubts about their ability to compete against the nation’s best teams.
I stand by my assessment that the defense has faced issues, particularly with tackling and coverage mistakes. Without the offensive strength, Miami would be in a much tougher position.
Fortunately, there is still an opportunity to improve, and facing Florida State is an ideal chance. The Seminoles have struggled offensively, scoring only 21 points in their season opener against Georgia Tech and failing to surpass 16 points in subsequent games. Whether it’s Brock Glenn or Luke Kromenhoek under center, Miami’s defense needs to assert its dominance.
If Florida State continues to struggle offensively on Saturday, Miami should cover the 21-point spread comfortably. Ultimately, this game should reflect the rivalry’s intensity, but it’s essential for Miami to demonstrate superiority against a clearly inferior opponent.
