As of September 18, 2024, Josiah Karapani, an outside back for the Brisbane Broncos, remains unsigned for the 2025 NRL season. Despite his promising debut this year, where he made nine first-grade appearances after joining on a train and trial contract, his contract status for the upcoming season is unresolved.
At just 22 years old, Karapani stepped up significantly for the Broncos, filling in for injured players like Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo. His contributions included an average of 92 running meters per game, 81 tackles, 23 tackle busts, two line-breaks, and one try assist.
Karapani’s tenure with the Broncos has yet to be solidified with a contract extension, leading to uncertainty about his future. Meanwhile, interest from the Canterbury Bulldogs has emerged, as they look to bolster their outside back positions in light of the departure of Jeral Skelton and the uncertain future of Josh Addo-Carr. This potential move could see Karapani return to Sydney, where he previously spent two seasons with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. During his time there, he was part of the club’s Top 30 roster in 2023 and impressed officials with his performance in the Jersey Flegg Cup.
Despite his limited game time in the top grade this season, Karapani’s youthful potential remains evident, and he is yet to fully showcase his abilities. His future with the Broncos is still up in the air, making him a notable candidate for other clubs looking to add depth to their squads.
