Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy has expressed strong approval of the Crimson Tide’s offensive performance this season, particularly highlighting the role of Jalen Milroe. According to McElroy, Alabama’s offense, which has scored 21 touchdowns and is currently ranked seventh nationally in points, is capitalizing on its strengths.
McElroy is particularly impressed with Milroe, who has been directly involved in 14 touchdowns so far this year. This achievement marks the highest number of touchdowns by an SEC player in their first three games over the past two decades. In addition to Milroe’s performance, McElroy has noted the remarkable play of Ryan Williams. At just 17 years old, Williams’ impact on the field has been so significant that head coach Nick Saban has compared him to former Alabama star Amari Cooper. Williams is also the second Alabama player in the last 25 years to score in each of the team’s first three games of the season.
McElroy also pointed out that last year’s coaching staff struggled with game planning, particularly in trying to fit Milroe into a conventional offensive scheme. He acknowledged that Milroe is not suited for a traditional drop-back passing role but is extraordinarily effective in the running game. McElroy praised the current coaching staff for adapting their strategy to leverage Milroe’s unique abilities. This includes implementing design plays for Milroe to run the ball 10 to 15 times per game, which aligns well with Alabama’s offensive strengths. McElroy is encouraged by how Alabama has utilized Milroe in quarterback sweeps and perimeter runs, while also integrating downfield passing attempts to complement the run game.
With a bye week ahead, Alabama will resume their season next week against Georgia.
