Former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has shared his unexpected admiration for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. On a recent episode of “Up and Adams” with Kay Adams, Williams expressed his deep appreciation for Stafford’s skill and technique. The 2024 NFL draft’s number-one overall pick revealed how his understanding of Stafford’s game evolved over time, noting the intricate strategies and impressive execution Stafford displays. Williams highlighted Stafford’s ability to manipulate defenders with play action and deliver precise throws, describing him as “unbelievable.”
Williams was taken aback by Stafford’s placement at 42 on the NFL Top 100 players list, particularly since he was ranked lower than quarterbacks like Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, and Dak Prescott, as well as notable names like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen. When asked where he would rank Stafford, Williams acknowledged Aaron Rodgers as his top choice but placed Stafford firmly in his top two. He conveyed his respect for Stafford and admitted that he tries to emulate Stafford’s techniques in his own game.
The admiration for Stafford extends beyond Williams. On “Up and Adams,” Adams noted that many NFL quarterbacks hold Stafford in high regard. CJ Stroud, the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year, recently expressed his respect for Stafford on the “Million Dollars Worth Of Game” podcast, calling him elite and speculating that Stafford might have more Super Bowl titles had he played earlier in a more favorable situation.
Looking ahead, Stafford will begin his 16th NFL season and fourth with the Rams. The Rams are scheduled to play the Chicago Bears on September 29th during Week 4 of the upcoming season. By then, Stafford will be matched up against Williams, who will be in his fourth NFL game and is expected to start for the Bears.
