Brisbane Broncos head coach Kevin Walters has expressed his disappointment over the criticism directed at both him and the team throughout the 2024 season. Walters acknowledges that the team’s performance has been subpar, falling short of expectations set by their strong showing in the previous season’s Grand Final.
Heading into 2024, there was considerable optimism surrounding the Broncos, but a series of challenges—including injuries, representative duties, and inconsistent form—has left the team on the brink of missing the finals. With only three games remaining, the Broncos still have a slim chance of making the top eight, but Walters admits their current performance does not justify a finals spot.
“I’m a realist, and I understand the disappointment from Broncos fans and the media given our position outside the top eight,” Walters said in an interview with SENQ. “We are not satisfied with where we stand, but we are working hard to correct the situation and realign our efforts.”
Walters highlighted that the team has struggled due to a significant number of injuries, particularly during a crucial six to seven-week period in the season. The absence of key players, including captain Adam Reynolds, compounded the issue, making it difficult for the team to secure victories during this pivotal phase of the year.
“The lack of key players during that period was a significant challenge for us,” Walters explained. “We didn’t manage to win the crucial games that could have set us up for a stronger finish, unlike last year. There needs to be a better approach, especially regarding the State of Origin period. While these factors are not excuses, they do provide context for why our performance hasn’t met expectations.”
Despite the ongoing absence of notable players such as Ezra Mam, Payne Haas, and Reece Walsh, there is some positive news for the Broncos. Winger Selwyn Cobbo, who had been dealing with personal issues, is set to return for their crucial upcoming game against the Eels.
Walters expressed his enthusiasm about Cobbo’s return, noting that the young player has been in good form at training and appears to have overcome recent difficulties. “Cobbo has been through a challenging period, but he seems to be in a better place now. It’s exciting to have him back in the team, and it will be great to see him in action again after a few weeks away.”
The Broncos are preparing to face the Eels at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, with hopes pinned on a strong performance to keep their slim finals hopes alive.
