Eels Forward Given Green Light to Leave Amid Rebuild
The Parramatta Eels have reportedly granted Reagan Campbell-Gillard permission to depart the club at the end of the 2024 season. This move comes as the Eels, under new coach Jason Ryles, face a major overhaul following their grand final appearance two years ago.
The Eels are grappling with a number of challenges including a strained salary cap, underperforming high-profile players, and several promising young talents moving on. These issues are pushing the club towards a significant reset.
Campbell-Gillard, once a key figure in the Eels’ lineup and a former State of Origin player, has struggled this season. His performance has notably declined, averaging just over 120 meters per game, a significant drop from last year’s average of 148 meters. This decrease in output is his lowest since his time with the Penrith Panthers.
Despite being contracted for another year on a $750,000 annual deal, Campbell-Gillard is reportedly free to leave early if he chooses. This potential departure could help the Eels free up substantial funds, which could be used to either target remaining free agents or, more likely, to promote young players and prepare for a significant free agency push next season.
The North Queensland Cowboys have shown considerable interest in Campbell-Gillard. However, their ability to sign him hinges on whether Valentine Holmes departs, as Holmes’ current commitment to staying in Townsville has impacted the Cowboys’ financial flexibility. Holmes, who was previously linked with a move to the St George Illawarra Dragons, has expressed a stronger desire to remain with the Cowboys.
The Dragons might emerge as a prominent contender for Campbell-Gillard’s services. With Shane Flanagan actively seeking to bolster his forward pack, the Dragons are exploring options with players like Daniel Saifiti and Corey Horsburgh. Although the Dragons have the financial capacity, securing either Saifiti from the Newcastle Knights or Horsburgh from the Canberra Raiders is not guaranteed.
Parramatta has made it clear they will not contribute financially to Campbell-Gillard’s move, meaning any interested club will need to cover the full $750,000 salary. In addition to Campbell-Gillard, the Eels have also permitted Maika Sivo and Ryan Matterson to explore other opportunities, further signaling the club’s intent to revamp its roster.
