Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze has praised freshman quarterback Walker White, who joined the team as a highly regarded recruit in the 2024 class. White, ranked among the top 50 recruits nationally, has continued to impress during his initial week of fall camp. Freeze commended White’s performance in 7-on-7 drills, noting that while the freshman quarterback is still adjusting to the faster pace and complexity of 11-on-11 situations, his skills are evident. Freeze highlighted that White is excelling in 7-on-7 scenarios, where he effectively handles the routes and displays impressive abilities.
Despite White’s standout performance, his position on the depth chart is likely to be towards the bottom as he develops. The starting quarterback role is expected to be occupied by Payton Thorne, with Hank Brown and Holden Geriner competing for the backup spot. Auburn’s quarterbacks coach Kent Austin also praised White, emphasizing his physical talents, including his size, strength, and accuracy. Austin pointed out that while White’s physical attributes are noteworthy, mastering the quarterback position involves more than just physical skills. It requires understanding the game, defensive strategies, and becoming a true student of the sport.
White, who made an early impact at Auburn, was a prominent four-star recruit from Little Rock Christian Academy and was featured on 247Sports’ ‘Freaks List.’ He was highly rated as the 41st overall recruit and the 5th quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class. White had numerous offers from top programs such as Alabama, Clemson, and Florida. In his senior year, White led Little Rock Christian Academy to an Arkansas 6A State Championship, completing 61% of his passes for 2,282 yards, 29 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also contributed with 346 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns.
Throughout his high school career, White demonstrated his capability by leading his team to a quarterfinals appearance in the Arkansas 6A State Playoffs during his junior year. He completed 54% of his passes for 2,093 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in that season, along with solid performances in his sophomore and junior years.
Overall, White’s early performance and high praise from Auburn’s coaching staff underscore his potential, although his full development and ultimate position on the depth chart will depend on his continued growth and adaptation to the college game.
