The Vancouver Canucks have renewed their affiliation with the Kalamazoo Wings for an additional two years, as announced by the club. This extension follows their partnership that began at the start of the 2023-24 ECHL season, marking their fourth stint together. The Wings previously served as Vancouver’s ECHL affiliate in 1984-87, 2011-15, and 2017-21.
The Canucks’ AHL affiliate remains the Abbotsford Canucks, based in Abbotsford, B.C., allowing players to transition between the AHL and Kalamazoo throughout the season. Ryan Johnson, Abbotsford’s general manager and assistant GM for Vancouver, expressed enthusiasm about continuing the affiliation, highlighting the stability and development opportunities it provides for their prospects.
Throughout its 50-year history, Kalamazoo has been affiliated with several NHL teams, including the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Dallas Stars, among others. However, the Canucks have been their most enduring partner. Notable players like Darren Archibald and Yann Sauvé have progressed from Kalamazoo to Vancouver through this long-standing connection.
Wings director of hockey operations and head coach Joel Martin also voiced his excitement about the renewed partnership, noting the shared values in player development and success. During the 2023-24 ECHL season, the Wings achieved a 38-30-4 record, securing the final playoff spot in the Central Division. Canucks prospects Josh Bloom and Ty Glover were among those who spent time with Kalamazoo during this period.
