Vasily Podkolzin, a forward for the Vancouver Canucks, has faced challenges over the past few seasons. After a promising rookie year with the Canucks in 2021-22, where he played the entire season in the NHL, Podkolzin has struggled to maintain a consistent spot on the team. In the subsequent two years, he has primarily been assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) with only brief appearances in the NHL, totaling 58 games in those two seasons.
Podkolzin, a former first-round draft pick, believes he is ready for a permanent role in the NHL. In a recent interview with Russian media outlet Match TV, he expressed his need for more trust from the Canucks’ management and more ice time to prove his capabilities. The Moscow native is focused on preparing thoroughly during the off-season, with the aim of returning to Vancouver in top form before training camp begins. His goal is to impress the coaching staff and secure a spot on the NHL roster for the start of the 2024-25 season.
During the 2023-24 season, Podkolzin enjoyed his most productive offensive performance since moving to North America. Playing for the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL, he accumulated 28 points through 15 goals and 13 assists in 44 games, while also accruing 28 penalty minutes and maintaining an even plus-minus rating. Additionally, he participated in 19 NHL games with the Canucks, contributing two assists.
“You see, I came to Vancouver at a time when the team was being rebuilt. Three coaches changed. Many factors played a role, and somewhere, maybe, I didn’t show myself very well. But I know that I can play good hockey. And I will play it. For this, I need a little more trust, a little more playing time. But I signed a new contract with the Canucks until 2026. The best I could get in this situation. Now I have one desire — to prepare well, return to Vancouver and play good hockey.” Podkolzin said.
As the new season approaches, the key to Podkolzin’s potential success lies in his ability to showcase his skills during training camp and pre-season games. If he can deliver strong performances in these early stages, there is a real possibility that he could secure a spot on the opening night roster.
