Former USC football defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, despite a challenging tenure marked by defensive struggles, has found a new role as co-defensive coordinator at Wisconsin. Grinch’s stint at USC was marred by dismal defensive performances, with the team ranking 116th in yards allowed per game and 118th in points allowed per game. The Trojans struggled to contain opponents throughout 2023, conceding over 30 points in eight of their final nine games before Grinch’s dismissal on November 5, following a high-scoring loss to Washington.
Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell, however, saw potential in Grinch’s resilience amidst adversity. Speaking at Big Ten Media Day, Fickell emphasized the value of hiring coaches who have faced and navigated through tough situations. He highlighted Grinch’s humility and perseverance, qualities that appealed to him despite the setbacks at USC. Fickell expressed confidence in Grinch’s growth, noting that such experiences often shape coaches into more effective leaders over time.
While Grinch’s tenure at USC was marred by defensive lapses, his new role at Wisconsin presents an opportunity for redemption. Fickell believes Grinch’s humility and ability to weather challenges will contribute positively to Wisconsin’s defensive strategy, aiming for a turnaround from past struggles.
In response to Grinch’s departure, USC has moved forward by appointing D’Anton Lynn, former UCLA defensive coordinator, and Eric Henderson, former Los Angeles Rams defensive line coach, to revamp their defensive unit. Lynn brings experience from a successful stint with UCLA, where his defense ranked among the top ten in yards and points allowed per game in 2023. Henderson, renowned for coaching defensive superstar Aaron Donald, joins USC with the goal of transforming the team’s defensive capabilities.
Both Lynn and Henderson’s appointments signify USC’s commitment to fortifying their defensive prowess and moving past the challenges faced under Grinch’s leadership. As they prepare for the upcoming season, USC aims to establish a robust defensive identity under their new coaching regime.
