People have been waiting for the consequences of the NCAA’s decision to pay its athletes directly on an annual basis ever since the court ruled in favor of the NCAA. On Monday night, ESPN’s Pete Thamel revealed that collegiate athletics officials were getting close to making a decision regarding roster caps, with a primary focus on baseball and football. Restrictions on roster sizes have been a contentious issue in the weeks after the House Settlement. There is a debate over whether it makes sense or if it will negatively impact walk-ons and those who are most in need of the scholarship seats. Losing scholarships and walk-on positions is obviously not desirable for anyone. Scholarships offer students once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and walk-ons go on to become stars.
Beyond the loss of football and baseball roster spots, other sports will feel the repercussions of the House Settlement.
The positive is that collegiate athletes will get the money they’ve long sought after.
The negative is that other sports may receive less funding, more roster spots may be removed, and more injuries will occur.
Thamel went on to say that the process is nowhere near over. A judicial approval process as well as a few other steps still remain but his sources are optimistic about the end of the week.
While everyone will have their opinions, student athletes will be affected, there is no other way to look at it.
Football and baseball are just the beginning. Women’s sports will change, men’s sports will change, collegiate sports are going to change.
