Concerns Surround Yankees’ Pursuit of Jazz Chisholm Jr. as Trade Target
Recent discussions within Major League Baseball have focused on the potential acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. by the New York Yankees, but reports indicate significant reservations about his fit within the team’s clubhouse dynamics.
MLB insider Jon Heyman from The New York Post initially reported that the Yankees have been considering Jazz Chisholm Jr., the versatile slugger currently with the Miami Marlins, as a trade target leading up to the deadline. Chisholm Jr., primarily a center fielder for the Marlins but also capable of playing second base, is viewed as a potential infield solution for the Yankees, who have struggled with production from key positions like second and third base throughout the season.
However, insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports has cast doubt on Chisholm Jr.’s suitability based on his reputation among teammates. Nightengale highlighted concerns about the player’s impact on team chemistry, describing him as a divisive presence in the Marlins’ clubhouse:
“Well, I’m surprised it’s being brought up now, just because they’ve been trying to trade him all year, they’ve been trying to trade him the last couple years. Been a nightmare in the clubhouse,” Nightengale stated during the “Barreled Up Podcast” on July 10.
Nightengale referenced a pivotal meeting held during manager Don Mattingly’s tenure in 2022, where discussions reportedly revolved around Chisholm Jr.’s unconventional behavior and its impact on team dynamics. Chisholm Jr. himself acknowledged these issues earlier this year, reflecting on the team’s attempt to impose certain behavioral expectations:
“A meeting with guys I don’t hang out with,” Chisholm revealed in a statement via CBS Sports. “They wanted to put me in a box and it wasn’t happening. ‘The way he dresses coming to the field.’ ‘Oh he wears four chains on the field.’ ‘He doesn’t wear dress shoes on the team plane’.”
Despite these concerns, Chisholm Jr. has shown flashes of brilliance on the field, characterized by his charismatic playing style and occasional standout performances. In the current season, the 26-year-old has maintained a batting average of .252, coupled with a .736 OPS, 12 home runs, and 42 RBIs in 91 games for the Marlins. With two more seasons under team control, he represents a potential long-term solution for the Yankees, particularly with Gleyber Torres facing free agency after the season.
