Entering the offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders faced many of the same issues that plagued them last season, with quarterback and offensive line being their most pressing needs.
However, with the 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Raiders found themselves out of range to select one of the top quarterbacks, as a record number were taken in the first 12 picks. This left the Raiders without a quality quarterback option.
The team also needed help on the offensive line, with offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga considered a likely choice. But due to the early run on quarterbacks, tight end Brock Bowers was still available when the Raiders were on the clock. General manager Tom Telesco had to decide between addressing a need or drafting the best player available. He wisely opted for Bowers, despite the team’s ongoing need for offensive linemen, acknowledging that a generational talent like Bowers could make a far greater impact than a lineman.
Although the Raiders still face struggles on the offensive line, Bowers has been a game-changer. Halfway through his rookie season, he’s putting up eye-popping stats, ranking among the top tight ends in the league. In fact, his dominance has even overshadowed several prominent wide receivers.
Tight ends often serve as a quarterback’s safety net, but for Bowers, in just his first nine games, he’s become a key security blanket for the Raiders’ struggling quarterbacks. His performance has earned him a top spot in targets among tight ends this season.
While the Raiders’ current season hasn’t been ideal, Bowers’ presence could be exactly what the team needs for a brighter future. The road to recovery for the Raiders has been tough, but a game-changing draft pick like Bowers could be the catalyst for long-term success. Despite a 2-7 record and many challenges ahead this season, the Raiders may finally be on the path to overcoming two decades of disappointment.
