‘I do’ – Ange Postecoglou Misses Passionate Support from Celtic Days
Former Celtic gaffer Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he misses the fervent support of the Scottish fans since his departure for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
Having steered Celtic to a triumphant Treble in his final season, Postecoglou took the leap to the English Premier League. His dynamic attacking football has since won many admirers in North London, despite Spurs narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification for next season.
Despite his new adventures, the Australian coach hasn’t forgotten his fond memories of Scotland. While serving as a pundit for ITV, Postecoglou delivered a glowing assessment of the Scottish national team as they prepared for their crucial Euro 2024 clash with Hungary. He confidently backed Steve Clarke’s side to clinch victory in their final group stage match, potentially securing a historic spot in the knockout stages for the first time ever.
“I have to declare I am on the Scotland bandwagon,” said Postecoglou. “I followed them for a couple of years when I was at Celtic, obviously. They obviously got blown away in that first game. It’s always hard that first game of the tournament – it could go either way. The hosts could be nervous, but Germany were flying, and that is probably as passive as I have seen the Scottish team in quite a long time. The strength they showed in the second game is their capacity to run, with energy. If they can bring that, they can cause any team problems. They have talked about making history, I think they are a good bet for that tomorrow.”
Asked by host Laura Woods on whether he missed the Scottish fans, especially after witnessing the Tartan Army’s exuberant celebrations in Germany, the Australian admitted: “I do. That is part of the reason I am on the bandwagon! When the national team plays, they are great – and the good thing is that since Steve Clarke has taken over, the team represents them really well. It is a credit to them, and they will play a big part tomorrow.”
Ange left Celtic after two remarkable seasons, during which he secured five out of six domestic trophies available to him. He signed off with a memorable Treble before making his move to Spurs last summer. During his time in Glasgow Ange raved about the passion and support of Celtic fans for their club and felt at home because his passion for the game was matched and even surpassed by those in the stands.
