Auburn EDGE Brenton Williams announced he will enter the transfer portal

The Auburn Tigers football team is experiencing the effects of the Transfer Portal Season, a period when players can explore transferring to other programs. It is anticipated that there will be changes to the Auburn football roster in the coming weeks, particularly in the defensive front. On Tuesday, Auburn witnessed its first instance of transfer portal activity, indicating that players are considering or opting for transfers to other collegiate football programs.

Auburn’s EDGE (defensive end) player, Brenton Williams, has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. Williams, a native of Opelika, Alabama, played in two games as a true freshman during the previous season. Originally committed to Coastal Carolina, he later switched his commitment to Auburn when they increased their recruitment efforts towards him.

In his announcement on social media platform X, Williams stated that he is entering the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining. He expressed gratitude to the Auburn family and attached a video of his practice highlights in the tweet.

This decision does not come as a significant surprise, as Williams was not expected to have a significant impact in the 2024 season. With Auburn’s coaching staff bringing in talented recruits like Jomanta Waller and Joe Phillips, it was anticipated that Williams would be surpassed on the depth chart in the near future.

While Auburn does require depth on the defensive line, losing Williams may further emphasize the need to address this area during the transfer window. Additionally, his departure could strengthen Auburn’s appeal to potential buck linebackers they may pursue in the coming weeks.

Jalen McLeod, Auburn’s primary pass rusher on the roster, is expected to have a prominent season. Nonetheless, it is likely that the Tigers will seek to add another edge defender before the start of the 2024 season.
