When Corey Oates was younger, he gained a reputation as a versatile player who could excel in various positions on the rugby league field. Now, that versatility is paying off for the 29-year-old Brisbane Broncos veteran.
Oates, who has scored 119 tries in 202 games, making him the fourth highest try-scorer in Broncos history, initially found his place on the wing. However, he is now embracing a new role assigned to him by coach Kevin Walters.
After recovering from a knee injury earlier in the season, Oates made his first NRL appearance of the year on Friday night, coming off the bench in the forwards. He made an immediate impact, scoring a try and causing havoc in the team’s 34-12 victory over the Cowboys.
Walters has expressed his desire to maintain Oates in a utility position for now, which allows the team to cope with the loss of an outside back during a match.
Reflecting on his journey, Oates shared, “When I first started out, someone mentioned to me that my mobility in the utility role might be the reason why I often found myself on the bench, providing support. Then, I found my home on the wing for many years, and now it’s coming to my advantage. I can play multiple positions. Whenever I have the opportunity to step onto the field and help the team, I need to do my job. I’ve played in all positions before, so it’s nothing new to me.”
Although Oates missed out on a starting wing spot this year due to the emergence of young talent Deine Mariner, he harbors no bitterness or resentment. He did not play in the Queensland Cup for Burleigh earlier this season, not because of any negative reasons speculated in some quarters, but simply because he was recovering from a knee injury.
“I pushed myself too hard despite the knee causing me some trouble. When I didn’t get selected, I kept pushing and it eventually backfired,” Oates explained. “I had to receive some injections to relieve the pain, and that’s why I trained separately from the team in recent weeks. But currently, my knee feels the best it has in a long time, so I’m quite pleased.”
“I understand that change is inevitable, and there will always be a new generation of players coming through. My focus is on doing my part during training and giving my best.”
When Corey Oates stepped onto the field at Suncorp Stadium against the Cowboys, he received an overwhelming cheer from the crowd. This reaction didn’t come as a surprise, as he has previously been honored with the Broncos’ fan favorite award on presentation night.
“It was an incredible experience. I got goosebumps from the reception. I’m not sure if it was caught on camera, but I couldn’t help but smile. It brought me immense joy,” Oates expressed.
“The support of the crowd and the fans is one of the main reasons why I have remained loyal to the Broncos. I have a deep love for the club.”
