With the departures of Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis during the offseason, Miami Dolphins’ general manager Chris Grier had the task of finding potential replacements for the upcoming season.
To address this need, Miami made several signings at the position during the early stages of free agency, one of which was Benito Jones.
At 26 years old, Jones returned to the Dolphins on a one-year contract valued at $1.79 million, after spending the previous two seasons with the Detroit Lions.
According to Over the Cap, Jones’ contract details include a $1.54 million base salary, which is fully guaranteed, along with a $250,000 signing bonus. As it stands, his cap hit for the 2024 season is set at $1.79 million.
Given the terms of the contract, it is probable that Benito Jones, the former Ole Miss Rebel, will secure a roster spot in September as long as he remains healthy. Releasing Jones would not result in any cost savings for the team, but it would impose a dead cap hit of $1.79 million.
To earn playing time, Jones will have to compete with a group of newly signed players, re-signed individuals, and returning veterans, likely serving as a backup to or alongside Zach Sieler.
