Daniel Sprong, a 27-year-old unrestricted free agent (UFA) from the Detroit Red Wings, emerges as one of the most coveted players left in the NHL’s recent free agency period, despite the flurry of signings that have already taken place.
Sprong’s appeal stems from his impressive goal-scoring record, tallying a total of 39 goals over the past two seasons, with 18 goals credited to his name during the 2023-24 season with Detroit. What sets him apart is his ability to maintain strong offensive production despite averaging less than 12 minutes of ice time per game over these seasons.
Among the notable UFAs still available are Tyler Johnson (Chicago Blackhawks), Max Pacioretty (Washington Capitals), Ryan Suter (Dallas Stars), Anthony DeAngelo (Carolina Hurricanes), James van Riemsdyk (Boston Bruins), as well as former Red Wings Filip Zadina (San Jose Sharks), Dominik Kubalik (Ottawa Senators), and Jakub Vrana (St. Louis Blues).
Although AFP Analytics projected Sprong to secure a lucrative three-year deal worth $4 million per season, he remains unsigned a week after the initial rush of free agent signings. However, it’s widely expected that he will secure a contract in the NHL soon.
One potential hurdle for Sprong could be his reputation for having a below-average overall game. While he showcased his scoring prowess with 21 goals in his final season with the Seattle Kraken, his performance wasn’t consistent, occasionally finding himself scratched from games. This past season, his overall game didn’t always meet the expectations of coach Derek Lalonde.
Despite these challenges, the Red Wings were pleased with Sprong’s offensive contributions, appreciating his ability to score regardless of the line he was assigned to. General Manager Steve Yzerman indicated the possibility of making further moves but emphasized the necessity of maintaining cap space, with $20 million earmarked for four key restricted free agents: Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Joe Veleno, and Jonatan Berggren. Raymond and Seider are anticipated to command a significant portion of this budget, potentially around $17 million combined.
Veleno has initiated arbitration proceedings, though negotiations are likely to result in a settlement before a formal hearing is required.
Sprong previously signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Red Wings under Yzerman’s management last season. However, Detroit currently lacks sufficient cap space to offer him a contract even at this previous level of compensation.
