The Atlanta Falcons currently face some cap space limitations, with only around $4 million available. In order to address their needs on the defensive side of the ball, General Manager Terry Fontenot will likely have to restructure certain contracts to create additional cap space. However, with some adjustments, they should be able to acquire any free agent from the list.
1. Calais Campbell, DL: Despite being 37 years old, Campbell had an impressive season with the Falcons, accumulating 6.5 sacks, 17 knockdowns, and 10 tackles for loss. His versatility in playing along the defensive line could greatly benefit Atlanta’s trenches.
2. Jadeveon Clowney, EDGE: Clowney’s last free agency stint lasted until August, resulting in a modest $2.5 million deal with the Ravens. However, he had one of the best seasons of his career, recording 9.5 sacks and 19 quarterback knockdowns. The Falcons are in dire need of improved pass rush, and Clowney would be an immediate upgrade in that regard.
3. Stephon Gilmore, CB: Despite moving between multiple teams in recent years, Gilmore remains a capable cornerback. While he may not command the same salary as when he won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, his experience and durability make him an appealing option for the Falcons to strengthen their cornerback position.
4. Xavien Howard, CB: Howard, although on the older side, displayed strong performance before a foot injury hindered his playing time. With his ball skills and previous success of recording 10 interceptions in a season, Howard could provide veteran leadership and bolster a young cornerback room in Atlanta.
5. Ahkello Witherspoon, CB: Witherspoon missed a significant portion of the 2022 season but made a successful return in 2023, having one of his best seasons with the Rams. Given the connection between Witherspoon, Raheem Morris, and Jimmy Lake, who were all with the Rams last year, the Falcons could benefit from acquiring him at a suitable price point that aligns well with their defensive scheme.
By potentially securing the services of these free agents, the Falcons would address their defensive needs and fortify their roster within the constraints of their salary cap situation.
