On Wednesday, we posed a question to the supporters of Newcastle United, asking them to assess Eddie Howe’s performance this season given the challenging circumstances. It’s important to note that there is no definitive or correct answer to this question. It purely revolves around personal opinions. Evaluating situations accurately becomes challenging due to the overwhelming influence of social media, where extreme viewpoints, both positive and negative, tend to garner the most attention.
We believed it was valuable to gather the opinions of thousands of Newcastle United fans regarding Eddie Howe’s performance and the events that have unfolded this season. It serves as a snapshot of public sentiment and provides insights into how things have been perceived thus far. Given the various challenges faced by Eddie Howe throughout the 2023/24 season, including injuries, suspensions, players’ fitness issues, an extensive fixture list, cup draws, support in the transfer market, the quality of inherited players, and the available player pool, we asked fans to select the option that best aligns with their assessment of his job. The question posed was: “How would you rate the job Eddie Howe has done this 2023/24 season (as of 11 March 2024) at Newcastle United, considering the circumstances?”

It can be challenging to accurately gauge the overall sentiment of the fanbase, as platforms like Twitter, YouTube, and social media tend to attract individuals seeking attention who often express extreme views, particularly negative ones, in order to stand out. However, when examining the statistics provided from thousands of Newcastle United fans’ votes, it becomes clear that only 9% considered Eddie Howe’s performance this season to be significantly below expectations, while another 24% believed it fell slightly short. On the other hand, more than two-thirds of the voting fans, totaling 67% (35% + 19% + 13%), felt that considering the circumstances, Eddie Howe has performed as well as could be expected or even better.
