Despite free agency still being a week away, the Buffalo Bills have taken proactive steps in solidifying their roster. They have decided to re-sign quarterback Mitch Trubisky to serve as a backup to Josh Allen, as reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
According to Tim Graham of The Athletic, the Bills had initial discussions with Trubisky about a potential return on Wednesday. However, the negotiations concluded swiftly for logical reasons.
Having been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers in February, Trubisky, who is 29 years old, was eligible to join a team prior to the official start of free agency on March 13.
Selected as the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mitch Trubisky had a relatively underwhelming four-year tenure with the Chicago Bears. In 2021, he joined the Buffalo Bills as a backup to Josh Allen. Throughout the season, Trubisky saw action in six games, completing six of eight passes for 43 yards, without throwing any touchdowns but with one interception.
Following his brief stint in Orchard Park, Trubisky signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2022 offseason. He started seven out of the 12 games he played for Pittsburgh, resulting in a 2-5 overall record and an 0-2 record in 2023. During his time with the Steelers, Trubisky achieved a 64.1 percent completion rate, throwing for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns, and ten interceptions.
With Kyle Allen, who served as Josh Allen’s backup this season, poised to become a free agent next week, the Buffalo Bills found themselves in need of another backup quarterback for the upcoming season. In this situation, re-signing a player like Trubisky, who is already acquainted with the team’s offensive system, could be a shrewd decision by Buffalo. By bringing Trubisky back, the Bills can maintain continuity and benefit from his familiarity with the team’s offensive schemes.
