Brandon Gignac’s recent experience with the Canadiens, consisting of a seven-game stint, has ignited his belief that he has a place in the Montreal lineup. Despite returning to the AHL not being a negative outcome, Gignac’s ultimate goal remains to contribute to the team’s success and earn another opportunity to prove himself with the Canadiens.
The 26-year-old forward signed a two-year, two-way contract worth US$1.55 million with the Canadiens in February, representing a significant upgrade from his previous minor-league deal with the Laval Rocket. As a former third-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils in 2016, Gignac had previously only played a single NHL game with the Devils.
Gignac made his Canadiens debut on February 6 against the Washington Capitals and remained with the team until February 21, when he was placed on waivers following the acquisition of centre Colin White from the Pittsburgh Penguins. During his time with the Canadiens, Gignac achieved a milestone by scoring his first NHL goal on February 13 against the Anaheim Ducks, capitalizing on a two-on-one opportunity alongside defenseman Kaiden Guhle. The goal, which concluded a 5-0 victory for Montreal, was met with a memorable ovation from both the bench and Bell Centre spectators.
During his time in the NHL, along with scoring his first goal, Gignac recorded seven shots, four hits, and seven blocked shots. However, he ended with a minus-3 rating. Initially, Gignac played on the Canadiens’ second line and second power-play unit due to Alex Newhook’s injury, but his role later diminished, and he was placed on the fourth line and removed from the power play.
Following the signing of his new contract, it seemed Gignac would remain with the Canadiens for the remainder of the season. However, the team’s acquisition of Colin White provided flexibility, allowing them to send Gignac back to the Laval Rocket, where he had been highly productive prior to his call-up. Despite the change, Gignac, standing at 5-foot-11 and 194 pounds, harbors no resentment.
Gignac understands the unpredictable nature of hockey, recognizing that nothing is guaranteed, and players must prove themselves continuously. He holds no ill feelings toward the situation and expresses contentment with his current position on the Rocket. His primary focus now is to contribute to the team’s push for the playoffs.
Reflecting on his goal, Gignac considers it the highlight of his experience, cherishing the opportunity to be in the moment and play in the NHL. He had been waiting for such an opportunity for a long time and is grateful for the chance to prove himself. Despite the possibility of pursuing opportunities in Europe, Gignac remained committed to his belief in his abilities and his desire to demonstrate his capability in the world’s best league.
Despite returning to the Laval Rocket, Brandon Gignac maintains his position as the team’s top scorer, having amassed 14 goals and 43 points in 48 games. Although he has only recorded one assist in the five games since his return, head coach Jean-François Houle is satisfied with Gignac’s performance. Gignac has generated numerous opportunities, including two breakaways and multiple chances in prime scoring areas and on the power play. With 12 shots during this period, he has been actively seeking to contribute.
Houle acknowledged Gignac’s strong play over the weekend, highlighting his efforts and expressing hope that he will continue to make an impact on the scoresheet. Gignac’s commitment and dedication to helping the team progress and earn another call-up exemplify the mindset shared by all the players on the Rocket roster.
The Rocket is set to embark on a three-game homestand, with the first matchup against the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday night. Currently sitting at the bottom of the North Division, Laval (23-24-7) trails by four points for a playoff position, with 18 games remaining in the season. Unfortunately, they will be without forward Lias Andersson, who is serving a one-game suspension due to an interference incident that occurred in their previous game against Springfield.
