The position that Kirk Cousins will play in 2024 will be one of the greatest quarterback dominoes to fall next week.
The 13-year veteran will be attractive to a number of teams, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk thinks Cousins may have made up his mind already.
“There are very solid signs that Cousins is thinking seriously about relocating his family to Atlanta. It would imply that he would sign a contract with the Falcons, naturally,” says Florio. “The Falcons have always been the top alternative to the Vikings for Cousins, who becomes an unrestricted free agent next Wednesday.”
After six seasons with the team, it would be shocking if Minnesota didn’t make every effort to re-sign Cousins.
But with only $37.3 million in budget room, the Vikings are also getting ready to offer All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson a likely game-changing contract, according to Over The budget. Cousins might have played his final down for Minnesota if he gets a better offer elsewhere.
But if all goes as planned, Atlanta would be the most sensible destination. The Falcons have roughly $37.45 million in salary room, but its young players—TE Kyle Pitts, RB Bijan Robinson, and WR Drake London—are still signed to rookie contracts.
Julie, the wife of the cousins, was raised in adjacent Alpharetta, Georgia, where her parents currently reside.
When Cousins enters free agency, his health will be the main concern. The 35-year-old is mending from an Achilles tendon rupture, but everything seems to be going well for him.
Cousins must make a major choice because where he ends his career will probably depend on the team he inks his next contract with. In February, he disclosed his intention to continue playing for a few more years in order to reach the “15-year threshold.”
It seems inevitable that Cousins will move his family south if the Falcons are pleased with his recuperation and are prepared to pay the four-time Pro Bowler.
