Newcastle United have a balance to strike in the coming transfer windows with the Premier League’s financial rules in mind.
The current January transfer window has so far been a slow one around the Premier League, something that has mainly been put down to the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) that have replaced Financial Fair Play (FFP). For Newcastle, as well as several other clubs it means that they need to sell players to boost revenues in windows to come.
One option over the last few days has been to cash in on full-back Kieran Trippier and winger Miguel Almiron. Trippier has gained interest from Bayern Munich with the German club said to be willing to pay a fee of £12.8 million, while Almiron has been linked with a £30 million exit to Saudi Arabia.
Both deals now look like they’re not going to happen. Bayern’s bid does not meet Newcastle’s valuation of Trippier, while Almiron wants to stay at St James’ Park.
It means that Newcastle will have to find another way to raise funds in the final days of the January transfer window. One way to do this is to cash in on players struggling for regular game time.
In the current squad, there are probably four that fall into the category; Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett, Emil Krafth, and Isaac Hayden. Looking at the value of all four players (via Transfermarkt), selling all four could give Newcastle a potential financial boost of £22.5 million.
If that is achieved, it would mean that the club could afford not to sell a player such as Trippier or Almiron in the future. Lascelles has recently been linked with a move to Besiktas with the centre-back out of contract in the summer.
Hayden spent the first half of the season on loan with Belgian side Standard Liege. He returned to St James’ Park earlier this month and could be one of the candidates to move before the end of the window.
