Newcastle United face Blackburn Rovers for a place in the FA Cup quarter finals on Tuesday, as they look for a response to Saturday night’s defeat.
The Magpies were appalling against Arsenal, with a disastrous display ending in a 4-1 defeat. It was expected to be a feisty game, but Eddie Howe‘s side were timid throughout.
It was a breeze for the officials and the Arsenal players, as Mikel Arteta continued his charge towards the Premier League title.
As for Newcastle, they now turn their attention to the FA Cup. It is a season-defining game at Ewood Park, and we now know who will be the referee on Tuesday night.
Jarred Gillett in charge of Blackburn vs Newcastle
It has been announced that Jarred Gillett will be in charge of Blackburn Rovers vs Newcastle United on Tuesday night.
It will be the third time that the Aussie has taken charge of a Toon game this season, all of which will have came in cup competitions.
The first was the Carabao Cup exit away to Chelsea, while the second was the FA Cup win over Fulham in January. That was a pretty routine night for the 37-year-old referee, although there were cries of handball for Newcastle’s opener.
However, the aforementioned game at Stamford Bridge was much more eventful. In fact, there was a major mistake made in the opening stages of the game.
Anthony Gordon was the victim of a horrible tackle by Moises Caicedo, and was eventually forced off because of it. The Chelsea midfielder was given a yellow, but replays showed that he clearly should have been sent off.
It was a horror tackle, and one that disappointed Eddie Howe after it resulted in Gordon having to be withdrawn.
Hopefully there are no similar challenges on Tuesday night and Gillett can stay out of the headlines. That is what Newcastle will want too, but their main aim will be progressing in the FA Cup with minimal fuss.
