After starting what seemed to be a stellar football career with Texas A&M, superstar quarterback Johnny Manziel headed into the 2014 NFL Draft with high hopes of being taken in the first round and becoming the new face of an NFL franchise.
Although Manziel came with a lot of off-the-field baggage, the Cleveland Browns couldn’t ignore his obvious talent and decided to take him with the No. 22 pick in the NFL Draft, which set him up to prove himself with the team moving forward.
Unfortunately for Manziel, that’s when his life began to spiral out of control, as he couldn’t focus on football and became somewhat of a trainwreck that the Browns had to deal with.
Ultimately, the Browns had enough of Manziel’s act after only 16 games played with the franchise and released him, and that’s where his NFL career basically ended with no other teams willing to take a chance on him or deal with the baggage he’d bring.
With Manziel’s football career now officially over and him seemingly having cleaned up his act, he has been reflecting on how things went wrong and certain things that went wrong along the way, like competing with Brian Hoyer in Cleveland, which he recently opened up about, according to Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com.
“Brian Hoyer had been waiting on an opportunity to go really provide for his family, get an opportunity, and he saw how much of an upper hand he had on me – and he didn’t hold back when it came to that,” Manziel said.
On the professional level, no one is going to give a helping hand if it means that the player has to take a step back as a result, and that’s clearly what happened between Hoyer and Manziel.
Ironically enough, Hoyer is still playing in the NFL while Manziel is doing the rounds in the media describing how things went wrong, so it seems as though the right man won in this situation.
