Although the actual season is still almost six weeks away, Marcus Stroman had his initial experience on Monday. The recently acquired right-handed pitcher for the Yankees appeared in full uniform and pitched three innings of live batting practice at Steinbrenner Field as part of his ongoing preparation for the upcoming regular season.
“It was exhilarating to put on the pinstripes and experience those sensations,” Stroman expressed. “Having a small crowd present was quite impressive. Overall, I felt good. Right now, it’s all about fine-tuning my mechanics and ensuring that I feel confident.”
Stroman had the company of Carlos Rodon as they took turns during the live session, each delivering approximately 44 pitches. Stroman showcased his ability to accumulate strikeouts, although his teammate Austin Wells managed to hit a home run off him.
“At this stage of the spring, both Stroman and Rodon appeared quite impressive,” commented manager Aaron Boone on their performance.
Stroman’s upcoming milestone is pitching in one of the Yankees’ split-squad Grapefruit League games scheduled for Sunday. This occasion holds significance for the Long Island native, who recently signed a two-year, $37 million contract with the Yankees.
While growing up, Stroman may not have specifically envisioned this opportunity, but he acknowledges that playing for the New York Yankees is the epitome of the sport. He believes that every player, as they embark on their journey to compete at the highest level, aspires to don the iconic Yankee uniform at some point.
“The Yankees are like a worldwide phenomenon you grow up watching, regardless of where you’re from. It’s an absolute honor,” Stroman expressed with gratitude. “I feel incredibly privileged and thankful to be a part of this esteemed organization. Putting on the pinstripes is a tremendous honor, and I carry that responsibility with great sincerity. I’m eager to get to work and contribute.”
During his upbringing in the Dominican Republic, Juan Soto idolized Robinson Cano, the former Yankees second baseman.
Although Soto has had the opportunity to meet and play alongside Cano in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, they have not engaged in a comprehensive discussion about playing for the Yankees.
“He congratulated me and acknowledged the greatness of playing here,” Soto shared. “However, we didn’t have a chance to delve into details about the organization and what it’s like to play here.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that all the team’s position players reported to spring training as scheduled on Monday and that they were all in good health.
While Carlos Rodon decided to part ways with his mustache this year, Gleyber Torres has embraced one, although he hinted that it might not last until Opening Day.
“I’m not completely sold on the mustache,” Boone said, grinning.
