The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Bryan McClendon, a former Georgia assistant, as their wide receivers coach. McClendon, who most recently served as the passing game coordinator and receivers coach at Oregon, will replace Brad Idzik in the role. Idzik opted to join Dave Canales’ staff with the Carolina Panthers as the offensive coordinator.
McClendon has a strong coaching background, having started his career as a graduate assistant at Georgia in 2007 before coaching running backs from 2009 to 2014. He was later promoted to assistant head coach, wide receivers coach, and run game coordinator. In 2015, he served as the interim head coach for Georgia and led the team to a victory in the TaxSlayer Bowl.
After leaving Georgia, McClendon joined South Carolina as co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach. He then spent time at Oregon as the passing game coordinator and receivers coach before briefly accepting a position as co-offensive coordinator at Miami in 2022. However, he returned to Georgia as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator before being hired by the Buccaneers.
McClendon will be responsible for coaching a Buccaneers receivers room that may see some changes. Mike Evans is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and Chris Godwin is in the final year of his contract. Tampa Bay is looking to develop young players at the position, including Trey Palmer and Rakim Jarrett.
