The 29-year-old’s future has been massively up in the air over the past few days amid rumours that he could be on his way to Saudi Arabia.
There have been reports of a deal being agreed with Al-Shabab, with Newcastle looking to receive £30million for Almiron. In turn, that would free the Magpies up to make some signings of their own.
But talk of Almiron being sold took a turn on Wednesday when it was reported that the winger had informed the club that he does not want to leave Tyneside this month. With a contract until 2026, Almiron is happy at Newcastle United.
That could serve as a blow to the Magpies’ transfer plan, as their covert operation goes up in smoke.
Miguel Almiron did not know Newcastle were trying to sell him
According to the Athletic, Newcastle have been secretly trying to sell Almiron this month. They state the discussions with Saudi clubs were going on without the £21million man knowing anything about them.
The Athletic add that the club did not want Almiron to think they were trying to offload him, but that plan failed when the story was leaked to the media.
Journalist Ben Jacobs was the first to report on Almiron potentially leaving, and you have to imagine the leak came from Saudi given that Newcastle were trying to be secretive about a possible Miggy exit.
This has now created a bit of a difficult situation behind the scenes at Newcastle. Almiron has made it clear that he wants to stay, while the club have been discussing getting rid of him without him even knowing.
But now it looks like he will be staying. Eddie Howe won’t have a problem with that, as he is a huge fan of Almiron. The Paraguay international has featured in every game for Newcastle this season, and is a key player for Howe.
However, there have been some concerns regarding his recent form. He has been nowhere near as influential as last season, for instance. In fact, he was so good last year that Dan Burn actually described him as ‘unplayable‘ at times.
That has rarely been the case during the 2023/24 campaign, but it looks like Almiron will get the chance to rectify that given his plans to remain at St James’ Park.
