West Brom will welcome Wolves to The Hawthorns in the fourth round of the FA Cup after Gary O’Neil’s side beat Brentford 3-2 in their third-round replay on Tuesday night.
Matheus Cunha’s extra-time penalty won the game for Wolves, who have not won at The Hawthorns since September 1996, three years before Cunha was born.
However, O’Neil’s side will now have the chance to break that streak when they travel to the Black Country to play West Brom on Sunday, 28 January in an 11:45am kick-off.
During the game, Wolves fans were heard signing about the Baggies. According to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone, via his X account on 16 January, they were chanting: “We hate West Brom.”
Huge occasion
There’s no denying that this is the tie of the round in the FA Cup.
Derby matches between Albion and Wolves have been few and far between over the last decade and a half due to the two teams usually being in a different league to one another.
Last time they met was in May 2021 when Mbaye Diagne scored a 62nd-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. Prior to that, the Baggies had won three out of three clashes with the Molineux club – including that 5-1 win away in Wolverhampton.
The fact that this game is kicking off on a Sunday morning shows the magnitude of it.
Not even the Old Firm gets an AM kick-off up in Scotland.
West Brom fans are divided on whether they wanted Wolves or Brentford to get through the third-round replay but we cannot be scared to play against the Wanderers just to preserve that almost three-decade-long unbeaten home record against them.
We’ll be the underdogs but we’ve had that tag plenty of times in local derbies throughout the years and Carlos Corberan’s side is currently performing well above expectations in the Championship.
Who knows how it will end up at this point.
