One week after winning its first national title since 1997, Michigan’s football program has lost a top-100 recruit in its 2025 class.
Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep four-star cornerback Chris Ewald Jr. told On3′s Hayes Fawcett that he has decommitted from the Wolverines and then confirmed it on his Instagram page.
The 6-foot, 160-pounder was Michigan’s first verbal pledge in the 2025 cycle back in December 2022 but has been receptive to other programs as well, especially recently. The No. 86 overall prospect and No. 11 cornerback nationally, per the 247Sports’ Composite rankings, has made visits to Florida State, Miami and Georgia and has received 33 reported offers.
His departure stings for the Wolverines, who are looking to create momentum on the recruiting trail following last week’s national championship victory over Washington. Ewald’s decision also comes on the same day Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Wolverines now have three commits in the 2025 class: four-star quarterback Carter Smith, four-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka and four-star tight end Eli Owens.
Cornerback is a primary position of need for Michigan this cycle. It signed two in the 2024 class, and neither were ranked in the top 700 nationally.
