The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon [14 January] that Carlos Corberan would “love” to take the Leeds striker on loan, having worked with him during his time at Elland Road.
It is understood, however, that Leeds would expect any potential Championship promotion rivals to cover his full wage until the end of the season. A move to Scotland, with Rangers and Celtic keeping tabs, could be more convenient.
“West Brom are the latest club to take an interest in Leeds United’s out-of-favour forward Joe Gelhardt,” Nixon wrote.
“Carlos Corberan worked with Gelhardt at Elland Road and would love him on loan but Leeds want full wages from any potential promotion rival.
Disappointing return
The Baggies’ current ownership issues could be a huge barrier to making a deal happen for Gelhardt. Owned by Lai Guochuan, but looking for a takeover bid at The Hawthorns, the club’s money situation is in dire straits.
Most recently, Guochuan borrowed an extra loan on top of a previous £20million, as per BBC Sport, to help with “funding the football club’s general business operations.”
With Leeds wanting Gelhardt’s full wages covered by any potential suitor this January, West Brom may distance themselves from bringing the striker in on loan to avoid any further money issues.
And with West Brom being one of Leeds’ main rivals for Premier League promotion this season, the Whites should probably look elsewhere if they are desperate for the young striker to gain valuable minutes on the pitch away from Elland Road.
The 21-year-old has managed just eight appearances under Daniel Farke since returning from his season-long loan with Sunderland last season. A move to Celtic or Rangers could signify a fresh start for the youngster, rather than keeping in the Championship.
