Ravens Considering Trade for DE Za’Darius Smith from Browns
As the Baltimore Ravens enjoy a successful five-game winning streak, fueled by standout performances from Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, concerns persist about their pass defense. Heading into Week 8, the Ravens are allowing an alarming average of 287.1 passing yards per game, which ranks them at the bottom of the league. Conversely, their rushing defense is performing exceptionally well, allowing only 68.4 yards per game, creating a puzzling contrast in their defensive capabilities.
In light of these challenges, the Ravens are reportedly exploring trade options to bolster their pass-rush, focusing on acquiring veteran defensive end Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. This information was initially reported by Brad Stainbrook from 247Sports. Smith, who was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, has also attracted interest from other teams, including the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders.
While bringing Smith onto the roster wouldn’t directly improve the struggling secondary, his ability to pressure quarterbacks could alleviate some of the burden on the defensive backs. By disrupting the opposing quarterback’s rhythm, Smith could reduce the amount of time they have to throw, potentially curtailing the number of yards surrendered through the air. So far this season, Smith has recorded four sacks, and joining a defensive line that already demands considerable attention from offenses could enhance his production.
The Ravens’ current pass-rush is highlighted by linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who is tied for the fourth-most sacks in the NFL with seven, alongside Odafe Oweh, who has contributed 4.5 sacks. The addition of Smith could amplify their effectiveness and provide the Ravens’ defense with a much-needed boost.
During his tenure with Baltimore, Smith played in 58 regular-season games, starting 16 of those and accumulating 119 total tackles, 18.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. After leaving the Ravens, he significantly elevated his game, earning Pro Bowl honors in two of his three seasons with the Green Bay Packers, followed by another Pro Bowl selection during his stint with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022.
As the Ravens prepare to face the Browns in Week 8, the prospect of acquiring Smith may offer a strategic advantage, helping to address their ongoing defensive struggles and reinforcing their playoff aspirations.
