Schenn’s positive feedback reflects a broader respect for Berube’s methods. Former Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger also shared his admiration in a June podcast episode, recounting Berube’s formidable presence and the high regard in which he is held by peers. Pronger expressed confusion over Berube’s firing by Philadelphia’s then-GM Ron Hextall, indicating that Berube’s impact was widely recognized.
Additionally, Jon Cooper, head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, has voiced strong support for Berube. Cooper praised Berube’s ability to draw the best from his players and emphasized his honesty and effectiveness as a coach. Cooper’s comments underline Berube’s reputation for demanding an honest effort from his team and maintaining a challenging but fair approach.
At 58, Berube brings substantial experience to the Leafs. His career includes over 1,000 NHL games as a player and a solid coaching record. As the 16th head coach in Maple Leafs history who previously played for the team, Berube has amassed a coaching record of 281 wins, 190 losses, and 72 ties over 543 regular season games, along with a 27-31 postseason record. His tenure with the St. Louis Blues, highlighted by a Stanley Cup win in the 2018-19 season, has been particularly notable. Over six seasons with the Blues, he achieved a 206-132-44 record.
