Darren Rizzi’s Future with the New Orleans Saints Could Hinge on Head Coaching Role
As the New Orleans Saints approach potential coaching changes, Darren Rizzi’s role may be all or nothing in 2025. Over the past decade, of 23 interim head coaches in the NFL, only three—Antonio Pierce, Doug Marrone, and Mike Mularkey—were retained as full-time head coaches. Most of the rest didn’t stay with their teams after the interim role ended.
Losing Rizzi would be a significant blow to the Saints. Known as a top leader in special teams, Rizzi has made substantial contributions, including spearheading successful efforts to adjust NFL kickoff rules. His leadership and strategic skills make him an ideal candidate to bridge the gap between coaching regimes.
However, if he’s not offered the head coaching position, Rizzi might feel undervalued and decide against returning to his previous role. Additionally, a new head coach may prefer a fresh start and not retain last season’s interim head coach. Both factors could ultimately lead to Rizzi’s departure.
