Carlton Palmer believes Peterborough United attacker Kwame Poku would be a good addition to Carlos Corberan’s West Brom squad in the January window.
Online news outlet TEAMtalk reported via their website on 18 November that the League One “assist king” could be a target for a move in the New Year with the Baggies among a host of clubs interested in signing him.
Having registered six goals and six more assists in the league this term he is now also attracting the likes of Sunderland, Ipswich, Stoke and Millwall and Palmer believes his versatility could in attack could attract Corberan’s eye.
Speaking to Football League World (21 November), he said:
“Poku has registered six goals and six assists so far this season for the League One outfit, and he is only 22 and can play through the middle and down either flank.
“Carlos Corberan likes players who are versatile and can play different positions, with Daryl Dike still struggling for consistent fitness and games.

“I think Carlos is looking for other options should the proposed takeover take place, as he looks to strengthen his squad to push on for a play-off place or even automatic promotion.”
Potential can’t be ignored
While it is always somewhat of a gamble to sign a player from a lower league it is certainly looking like the Ghana international might be ready to make the step up after a tremendous campaign so far.
The Baggies have a welcome reputation when it comes to signing talent from the lower leagues in England, for example, Brandon Thomas-Asante but given their need for attacking reinforcement Poku’s potential cannot be ignored.
Poku’s asking price hasn’t been made clear, and the presence of a significant number of Championship clubs interested in the sought-after talent could make it a fair amount higher than it otherwise would have been.
This certainly means that any move from West Brom will hinge on their proposed takeover being completed in order to fund any additions and according to the Daily Mail (16 November), the Baggies are now closer than ever to a takeover with parties in the US interested in buying the club from Guochuan Lai.
But that process could yet take months which leaves Corberan in a bit of a pickle and for now, the Spaniard must plan ahead while making do with the squad he has at his disposal now.
