Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony has slammed Dejphon Chansiri, calling his running of Sheffield Wednesday ‘disastrous’.
MacAnthony’s Peterborough was the side Wednesday beat to get to the League One play-off final last season, overcoming a four goal deficit to get to Wembley.
But since their promotion, it has been a downward spiral for the Owls, with Chansiri replacing Darren Moore as manager with Xisco Munoz, to Danny Rohl taking charge last month, and the Owls sitting bottom of the Championship, looking destined for an immediate return to the third tier.
MacAnthony on Chansiri’s management of Wednesday
Speaking on his podcast The Hard Truth, MacAnthony was comparing how his club Peterborough and Wednesday would manage getting back in the Championship, and said that Chansiri has been ‘disastrous’ in his decision making.
“A club of Peterborough’s size, you always have to plan for the eventuality of whether you can stay in the Champ. A club of Sheffield Wednesday’s size, with 40 or 50,000 fans, they should only be planning for the Championship, only to stay in the league. They’ve had a f***ing disastrous five or six months.
“They’re nine points adrift, it’s not impossible. Maybe it’s too early to be pulling the pin and planning for League One, but I think you need to do something to arrest the slide. Hiring and firing foreign managers isn’t going to do you any favours in trying to stay up in the Championship. I don’t think foreign managers are the best people to hire if I’m honest.”
The verdict
MacAnthony is right in saying Chansiri’s management of the club has been nothing short of a disaster since promotion.
The decision to sack Moore was surprising, but hiring Munoz was an underwhelming appointment.
Chansiri has also received plenty of backlash in recent weeks for his behaviour regarding the unpaid HMRC bill, which he has since paid despite asking 20,000 fans to each pay £100 in order to pay it off.
But with Rohl now in charge, there now seems to be some hope, despite MacAnthony saying that he disagrees with the appointment.
