Blaize Talagi is set to spend the next few weeks learning from Jarome Luai, the star player he will eventually replace at Penrith. After a standout rookie season with Parramatta, Talagi has joined the Samoan national team in preparation for their upcoming tour of England. Despite the Eels’ overall struggles, Talagi emerged as a bright spot, impressing in 19 NRL matches. His performances convinced the club that he was a key part of their future, leading them to offer him the fullback position previously held by captain Clint Gutherson.
Instead of accepting a lucrative extension with Parramatta, Talagi chose to sign a three-year deal with Penrith. There, he will partner with the renowned halfback Nathan Cleary and don the No. 6 jersey, previously worn by Luai during Penrith’s four consecutive premiership victories. This opportunity not only allows Talagi to represent his Samoan heritage but also to learn directly from Luai before his own debut with the Panthers.
Talagi expressed his excitement about learning from Luai, acknowledging his skills and leadership. “All the sixes look up to the top guys in the game,” he remarked, highlighting Luai as a prime example. “I’m looking forward to being a real sponge and absorbing everything I can from him.” He appreciates Luai’s long-standing partnership with Cleary and is eager to gain insights that could enhance his own game.
While the pressure is on the young player to fill Luai’s significant shoes, Luai himself is optimistic about Talagi’s potential. He humorously remarked that no one can truly fill his shoes but praised Talagi’s abilities. “He’s got strike with the ball and talent to create opportunities,” Luai said, encouraging Talagi to be himself and embrace his role in the camp.
Luai emphasized the importance of mentoring younger players, noting that sharing experiences is vital for their development. Talagi, who had a difficult decision turning down an offer from Parramatta—where he developed throughout his junior career—expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had there. “That decision was one of the toughest moments I’ve gone through,” he admitted, underscoring that he had to prioritize his career growth.
Talagi’s family remains a focal point for him, particularly his younger brother Ryda, who is a promising forward for Parramatta. He mentioned that his move to Penrith wouldn’t affect Ryda’s prospects with the Eels and hopes they can play together in the future. “That’s something my whole family would love to see,” he said, noting that his sister also plays club football.
