Kevin Campbell has praised Liverpool fans after they paid tribute to late Everton chairman Bill Kenwright at Anfield.
Everton confirmed the death of Kenwright, who had been on the Toffees’ board since 1989, in a statement on Tuesday (24 October).
Liverpool paid their own respects to the former West End theatre and film producer before Thursday’s (26 October) match with Toulouse.
Former Everton striker and current Sky Sports pundit Campbell took to Twitter (26 October) to thank Liverpool fans for showing “sheer class” with their tribute.
Fair play
Kenwright may have been connected to Everton for over three decades, including nearly 20 years as chairman, but he also had a strong bond with Liverpool – both the city as a whole and the football club.
Reds supporters respected the way Kenwright spoke passionately about the Hillsborough families’ fight for justice in 2013 – something that was of course far more important than any football match.
It was a fitting tribute at Anfield as The Hollies’ ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ played around the ground, with that song played by Everton in the past after Liverpool supporters were exonerated of any responsibility for the tragic Hillsborough disaster.
In what has been an emotional week, Everton fans and players will get the chance to pay their own respects to Kenwright when the Toffees face West Ham at the weekend, before then hosting Burnley at Goodison in the EFL Cup next Wednesday (1 November).
