Sheffield Wednesday welcome South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United to Hillsborough on Sunday.
Sheffield Wednesday have lost their opening two matches under new boss Danny Rohl; a 1-0 defeat at Watford last weekend followed up by a 3-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle in midweek.
But the young German coach takes charge of his first home game this Sunday, and it’s against a nearby neighbour and fellow struggler in Rotherham United.
The Millers claimed a big win vs Coventry City in midweek and now sit in 22nd place of the table, and six points ahead of the Owls who remain winless and in last place of the table after 13 league games.
Rohl didn’t make too many changes to the side that faced Plymouth. But many expected him to take Akin Famewo out of the left-back berth after his poor sowing vs Watford last weekend.
Reporter Dom Howson said on the matter after defeat vs Plymouth:
“Why oh why is Akin Famewo still playing at left-back when there is a perfectly good left-back sat on the bench? I just don’t get it. Famewo is a centre-half. Give him a run in his best position.”
Should Rohl drop Famewo for Rotherham?
Rohl has two very good, more attacking-minded left-backs in Reece James and Marvin Johnson who’ve both been largely shunned this season; Johnson especially.
And whilst Famewo remains a decent squad player, he’s simply not a left-back. He could do a much better job in the middle alongside someone like Dominic Iorfa, but it seems like Rohl is wanting Famewo to succeed at left-back.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether or not Famewo starts on Sunday and if he does so at left-back, or if one of James or Johnson comes in.
It’s another huge game for Wednesday and probably their biggest chance for a win all season; a win here would no doubt be a huge boost in confidence for everyone involved.
