Report: Brighton now in mix to sign 26-year-old assist machine on a free after Leeds interest this summer

Sky Sports Germany report that Premier League high-flyers Brighton are interested in a move to sign Kai Wagner as they look to provide competition for Pervis Estupinan – amid reports Leeds are also keen.

Wagner, 26, has starred in the MLS over the past five years. Joining Philadelphia Union at just 21, he has gone on to be one of the League’s best players. Certainly, the best left-back throughout the division.

The German, though, is set to leave. He will become a free agent when his contract ends, on December 31. Philadelphia have qualified for the MLS play-offs. But, he will leave and is available on a pre-contract.

Clubs can approach him now, ahead of signing him on a free from January 1. The latest report says that Brighton, Serie A side Lecce and Greek outfit AEK Athens are keen. As are an unnamed Bundesliga side.

It comes after The Athletic also reported he would be going on a free, and that we had shown interest in Wagner. Gianluca Di Marzio said West Ham, Brentford and Leeds were all admirers of the German star.

Wagner has a big decision to make. He can go anywhere in Europe given the interest in him. England will surely prove tempting, especially the Premier League. But, does he want to go and sit on the bench?

Or, would he rather join a club where he is going to get regular game time and continue his career in an upward spike? Brighton would be wonderful – he would likely get game time, given they’re in Europe.

The same with West Ham. At Brentford, Rico Henry is one of the first names on the team sheet. Leeds, he would certainly have a chance. But a return to Germany may win the battle – or, a trip to Greece.
