Pol Valentin has been criticised for his role in Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Plymouth Argyle last night.
YorkshireLive handed the defender a 3/10 rating following his costly mistake that allowed the visitors to double their lead on half-time.
Danny Rohl took charge of his second game since joining Sheffield Wednesday as they travelled south to take on the Pilgrims, who had sat one place above the relegation zone.
The Owls desperately needed to close the nine-point gap on Plymouth if they were to cling onto a chance of staying up, however the hosts claimed a comfortable win after another disappointing performance from Rohl’s side.
While no player left Home Park showered with praise, Pol Valentin received one of the lowest ratings for his poor display.
Valentin, who joined Sheffield Wednesday from Sporting Gijon in the summer, had gifted Plymouth an opportunity with a terrible pass back to Dominic Iorfa. Morgan Whittaker took the chance and made it 2-0 in the first half.
YorkshireLive journalist Ricky Charlesworth wasn’t impressed with the defender, writing: “Was solid enough until a calamitous error that gifted Whittaker the ball to easily slot home Argyle’s crucial second goal. Tried to make inroads down the right wing second half but to no avail.”
Can Pol Valentin recover?
It was a performance that Pol Valentin and his Sheffield Wednesday teammates will be eager to forget, but the Spaniard can definitely recover from it.
Valentin hadn’t started his career at Hillsborough in impressive fashion, but had looked a lot more assured in Rohl’s first game in charge against Watford.
Ricky Charlesworth had given Valentin a 6/10 rating despite defeat, with the right-back making the joint-highest number of tackles against the Hornets.
It has been a tough start to the season, but Rohl certainly doesn’t have a quick fix on his hands and players like Valentin will hopefully grow and adapt to Championship football over the coming months.
