Podkolzin explains the crucial impact that Canucks coach Sergei Gonchar has on his progress

In January 2023, Sergei Gonchar joined the Vancouver Canucks as a defensive development coach and also took on responsibilities with the powerplay units. His arrival has proven advantageous for several Russian players, including Vasily Podkolzin, Nikita Zadorov, Ilya Mikheyev, and Andrei Kuzmenko, although the latter three have since left the organization.

Vasily Podkolzin recently spoke to Russian media outlet Match TV, expressing the significant impact Gonchar has had on his growth as a player. Podkolzin highlighted Gonchar’s role in his development, noting that the coach’s support involves reviewing game footage and engaging in technical drills to enhance his performance.

Podkolzin noted, “It used to be that Gonchar worked primarily with defenders and specifically with Russian players. Now, with most of the Russian players having left, I am the only one remaining, which means Gonchar is more focused on me. We frequently review videos together to strategize improvements in my game.”

He further explained, “Gonchar consistently stays after practice to work on technical exercises with me.”

As Podkolzin approaches a critical season where he aims to solidify his place as a full-time NHL player, Gonchar’s guidance will be crucial. The Vancouver Canucks’ management is confident that Podkolzin possesses the potential to succeed in the NHL, and Gonchar’s mentoring will be instrumental in helping him reach that goal.
