BBC Sport journalist shares ‘looking good’ West Ham United verdict after ‘dismal’ showing last season

Things are still “looking good” at West Ham despite their defeat against Liverpool, according to BBC Sport journalist Emlyn Begley.

The Hammers suffered their second defeat of the Premier League season as they lost 3-1 to the Reds on Sunday (24 September).

David Moyes’s side, who lost to Manchester City by the same scoreline last Saturday (16 September), sit seventh in the league table.

“Despite this defeat, things are still looking good at West Ham – sitting seventh, compared to last season’s dismal beginning,” Begley wrote for BBC Sport (24 September).

Strong start

Much to the surprise of many Hammers supporters, Moyes’s players have enjoyed a strong start to the new Premier League campaign.

They have suffered back-to-back defeats, but those losses may not concern fans that much given how they came against Manchester City and Liverpool, who currently sit first and second in the table respectively.

The successive losses followed impressive victories against Chelsea, Brighton and Luton Town, and they followed an opening day draw with Bournemouth.

The East London club have also had success in Europe, with the Hammers defeating Serbian outfit Backa Topola 3-1 in the Europa League group stages on Thursday (21 September).

Up next for the men in claret and blue is a League Cup third round meeting with Lincoln City on Wednesday (27 September), with newly-promoted Sheffield United travelling to the London Stadium for a league encounter on Saturday (30 September).

It will, of course, get harder for Moyes and his players if they plan to successfully compete in all competitions over the coming months.
