Former Wolves keeper Matija Sarkic has had a promising start to life with Millwall put on hold by injury. The 26 year old joined the Lions for around £1.2m on August 3 after a move to Stoke City fell through.
Sarkic has started five Championship games for Gary Rowett’s side and impressed in their 1-0 win against Stoke but had to play through the pain barrier in a 1-1 draw with Birmingham and has been out since that September 2 game. Rowett had said following a 3-0 loss to Leeds on Sunday that Sarkic would be out “for a while”. The Southwark News reports the issue is with his quad muscles and is taking longer than first hoped.
We’ve had quite a lot of disruption to the team. We’ll be without Mati Sarkic for a while, so again that’s a blow for us,” said Rowett at the weekend. Sarkic had been at Wolves since being released by Aston Villa in July 2020 but made only three appearances for them, spending most of his time away from Molineux in loans at Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Stoke.
The keeper, who is a full Montenegro international, was named Birmingham supporters’ player of the season for 2021/22 and would go on to play for Wolves in cup games against Preston, Leeds and Liverpool. Wolves brought in Tom King on a free from Northampton in the summer as back up keeper, meaning Sarkic could move on for regular first team football. He started well at Millwall, keeping two clean sheets in his five games.
Meanwhile, Wolves return to action on Saturday when they are away to Luton Town. Gary O’Neil’s side will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at home to Liverpool.
